This has to be the stupidest thing I’ve heard.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So they just want us to rage-quit from buying manuals now, so they can discontinue it?

This. They’ve always said that you’re supposed to engage the parking brake as the first step of starting the engine. (Just checked my TSX’s owner’s manual for confirmation.) The electric parking brake just makes it enforceable.

Shouldn’t you have your parking break on already anyway? I guess it would be a pain if you stall it somewhere on the road...

That’s dumb. It would be annoying under normal conditions but I would probably just rage quit if I stalled it.
- Stall it
- Clutch in, foot on brake, neutral, hit parking brake switch
- wait for parking brake to engage
- hit start button
- hit parking brake switch, wait for brake to dissengage
- select first
- drive off
The simple process of turning a key has turned into 15 seconds of waiting on electronics you don’t want in a manual car in the first place to do their thing just so you can restart the engine.

Actually I’m sure our regular clicky parking brakes are enforceable too... I mean that parking brake light in the dash needs an electronic signal too.

Yeah, I should have said easier to enforce.

You forgot furious people behind you honking and overtaking you dangerously every two steps.
This actually creates a safety issue. I don’t think they thought this through.

Meh. I rarely use mine in parking lots. If it is flat first gear will hold the car just fine.

There’s got to be some sort of detection for stalls, right? Like if the engine stops without you switching it off maybe it doesn’t force this? I don’t stall often, but the other day I stalled for the first time in almost a year in the middle of a three lane road by letting the clutch out too slowly on a lazy 2-3 shift. Revs got too low it bogged and died. Cars were coming up on my butt. If I had to fuss with a parking brake I’d have been in full rage mode.

Every time I’ve stalled in the last year it’s because I inexplicably shifted into second in the parking lot at work and forgot to shift into first to turn out of it. As long as I can leave the car rolling while I turn the key it’s no big deal but this would be a catastrophe.

They wouldn’t be so bad if they went off more quickly. Dropping a handbrake takes, what, a half second tops? Meanwhile the stupid motor doodad in my Outback takes like 2-3 seconds to full disengage while making an obnoxious neee-oooooo-wop sound when you push the button in.

What’s more satisfying that pulling a handbrake anyway? Not pressing a goddamn plastic clicky-doo-bicky, that’s what.

This is an excellent point. I don’t stall my own vehicles because I know the clutch well, but I have to drive a buddy’s car, you bet your ass I’ll stall twice in the first two minutes.

I can’t even imagine trying to learn in it... though maybe it would be added motivation to get it right so you don’t have to deal with this. In other news I was behind an obviously new manual driver in a 500 Abarth with paper tags the other day who kept stalling it. I could she was getting a bit flustered when it happened the third time in about a mile and it took her a while to get it going again. I wish there was some way I could’ve let her know it didn’t bother me at all because she was doing God’s work to save the manuals in a great little car to do it in.

WTH... Look! We “improved” it! That is a perfect example of the engineers that designed it never driving a manual transmission vehicle... F’n morons. That should have never gotten past the design review committee.

I had the WORST drive about 2 weeks after I got mine. I had to go to a doctors appointment half an hour away (follow up for back surgery, so that didn’t help) and took a back route to annoy fewer people but it was so hilly and had so many stop signs and this guy on a moped kept getting so close he would steady himself on the hatch at lights. My doctor teased me for months about how flustered I was when I finally got there.
But good for her! The car was definitely worth learning for!

You might want to reconsider...
But yes, I sometimes do not use my parking brake, e.g. after washing my car and parking it back in my own spot that is flat. That’s because the wet brakes would stick the next day.

My wife’s manual Audi has an electronic parking brake. As bad as you think it is, it’s 100 times worse.
It doubles as a hill start assist. It’s wildly inconsistent, and it has grabbed on so tight sometimes that the car stalls.
It loves to beep at me about setting the parking brake, then having to step on the brake pedal before it will let me set the parking brake. All the beeps.

I would not buy a car if it requires the electronic parking brake to be on to start. Up here in the great white north parking brakes freeze in the on position if engaged in cold weather like 0 or below which we have already had several times this year.

That’s one (the only?) positive thing about modern start-stop systems: in most of them you just need to push the clutch in to have it restart after a stall.

Fair enough. Now I wonder how far I would actually roll if I didn’t have the brake on and got bumped in a spot like this...
